Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
