During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
