The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
